What a 1.75 inch stone does to stucco depends on the wall. On a traditional three-coat wall, roughly 3/4 inch of cement over lath, it pits the finish coat and pops spalls wherever the finish had already lost its bond. On a one-coat wall, a single roughly 1/2 inch basecoat over foam sheathing, which is what most of Pueblo West and the newer subdivisions wear, it can crack through to the foam. On EIFS, which is foam board under a thin acrylic skin, it dents and punctures.

Water in a hairline crack expands about 9 percent when it freezes. How the two work together
A hail pit is a spot where the finish coat is thinner and the ring of finish around the impact is cracked. Left through a winter, water enters that ring, freezes, and turns a pit into a spall. A freeze spall is a spot where the finish is gone and the brown coat is exposed. Left through a hail season, the next storm hits bare brown coat with nothing protecting it. Each season’s damage sets up the next. That is why this page treats them as one repair, and why the timing advice at the bottom matters more here than the price.
How the repair goes
- Map the damage. The crew walks every elevation, marks pits, spalls, and hollow areas with chalk, and photographs the whole thing with a date. This map is your insurance documentation as much as it is the work order.
- Sound around each spot. Hail damage is usually bigger than it looks, because the impact loosens finish beyond the visible pit. Each spot is tapped outward until the wall sounds solid, and the cut line goes there.
- Cut back and clean. Each damaged area is saw-cut to a clean edge and the loose finish, and any loose basecoat, is removed. On one-coat walls where hail cracked through, the foam behind is inspected and crushed or wet foam is replaced. On EIFS, punctures are cut out and rebuilt with EIFS components only.
- Rebuild in coats. Basecoat where the damage reached it, moist-cured. Finish coat at the matching texture, feathered into the surrounding wall. On a heavily pitted elevation, the honest call is often to stop chasing pits and recoat or coat the whole face, which comes out cheaper past a certain pit density and looks like a wall again.

- Seal the rest. Hairline cracks elsewhere on the elevation get sealed while the crew is there, because those are next winter’s spalls.
Working with your insurer
Hail is a sudden, identifiable event, which is why it is generally covered when freeze-thaw is not. What makes a claim go smoothly:
- Date the damage. Photos with timestamps, the storm date, and if possible the NWS storm report for that day. Most phones stamp the date automatically.
- Get a written scope, not just a price. The scope should name the elevations, the square footage of rebuilt area, the wall system, and whether the recommendation is spot repair, recoat, or coating, with the reason. Adjusters approve scopes, not totals.
- Know your deductible. Many Colorado policies now carry a separate wind and hail deductible, often a percentage of the dwelling coverage rather than a flat amount. On scattered damage worth a few hundred dollars, the repair may cost less than the deductible, and you should know that before filing.
- Do not let the scope underspecify matching. A spot repair approved for a pitted elevation that cannot be blended is a wall that looks worse than the damage. If a blend is not achievable, the scope should say so in writing.

That is the window: get hail damage sealed in late September or early October, before the pits become spalls. If you missed it, a temporary seal on the worst spots gets the wall through winter, and the rebuild goes on the calendar for after the April 29 mean last freeze.
