Hail Season and Your Stucco in Pueblo: What to Check Before and After a Storm

Colorado’s hail season runs from about mid-April to mid-September. The Front Range sits in the heart of what insurers call Hail Alley, the region with the highest frequency of large hail in North America, and the state ranks second only to Texas for hail insurance claims, with more than $5 billion in insured hail damage over the past decade according to the Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association. A Colorado Division of Insurance study found that hail accounts for a quarter to over half of homeowners premiums in the state, and those premiums roughly doubled between 2020 and 2025.

Pueblo is not on the edge of that map. NOAA’s list of billion-dollar weather disasters carries a June 13, 2018 entry for hailstorms in Colorado Springs and Pueblo that caused severe damage to many homes, businesses, and vehicles, at an adjusted cost of $1.2 billion; the NWS Pueblo office measured hail up to 3 inches over the southern Colorado Springs metro that day. Storm reports collected near Pueblo logged golf-ball hail, 1.75 inches, on August 9, 2025.

Roofs get the attention after a storm because roofers knock on doors. Stucco gets ignored, and the damage sits there until winter turns it into something worse. This post is about the stucco half.

What hail does to each kind of wall

A 1.75 inch hailstone falls at highway speed. What it does depends on what it hits.

Traditional three-coat stucco is roughly 3/4 inch of cement over paper and wire lath, plus a finish coat. It is the standard on Pueblo homes stuccoed before about 2000, including the stucco-over-block ranches of Belmont and Sunset Park. Hail this size pits the finish coat, leaving small round craters with crushed centers, and pops dish-shaped spalls wherever the finish had already lost its bond to the brown coat from freeze-thaw. The wall underneath usually survives. The finish is the casualty.

One-coat stucco is a single roughly 1/2 inch cement basecoat over foam sheathing, usually under an acrylic finish with foam trim bands. It is what most of Pueblo West and the newer subdivisions on the city’s edges wear. It is thinner, and foam behind it gives under impact. A large stone leaves radiating cracks around the impact point and, on a direct hit, a hole through to the foam. Each of those is a water entry point for the next thunderstorm.

EIFS is foam board under a thin polymer basecoat with mesh and an acrylic finish. It dents and punctures. Dents trap water behind the skin. Punctures let it into the foam. EIFS damage has to be repaired with EIFS components; a cement patch in an EIFS wall is a defect that traps water against the foam.

The other variable is the wall’s condition before the storm. A finish that spent the winter loosening on Pueblo’s roughly 165 freezing nights spalls at impacts that a sound finish would only pit. Before the season: April

The single most useful thing to do before hail season is to make sure the finish coat is bonded. Walk every elevation after the April 29 mean last freeze and tap around any cracks, below windowsills, and anywhere the finish looks lifted. Hollow spots are the ones hail will blow out. A patch in April, when cement cures properly, is cheaper than the same patch after a storm has turned it into a hole with a rain season behind it.

The second thing is sealant. On one-coat homes, the caulk joints between foam trim and field stucco are the leak points once hail has cracked the finish around them. A sealant pass in spring closes them before the storms.

The third is documentation. Photograph every elevation of the house in good light in April, with the date. If a June storm damages the wall, you now have a before picture, and adjusters respond to before pictures.

After a storm: the walk

Wait for the wall to dry, then walk it in low-angle light, morning or evening, with a coin for scale. You are looking for:

  • Pits with crushed centers, usually concentrated on the elevation the storm came from, most often west or south. Count them per elevation. A dozen is patch work. A hundred is a recoat.
  • Spalls, dish-shaped areas where the finish is gone and the brown coat shows. These were hollow before the storm.
  • Radiating cracks from a point on one-coat walls. Press gently beside the impact; if it gives, the foam is crushed.
  • Dents and punctures on EIFS.
  • Cracked or blown-out foam trim at sills, bands, and corners.
  • Staining below any of the above in the days after, which means water is already inside.

Photograph everything with the date, wide shot and close-up. Note the storm date. If you can, save the NWS storm report or a local news account of the storm; that ties the damage to a covered event.

The insurance conversation

Hail is a sudden, identifiable event, which is why it is generally covered under a standard homeowners policy while freeze-thaw, which is gradual, is generally not. Three things to know before filing:

Your deductible may be a percentage. Many Colorado policies now carry a separate wind and hail deductible, often set as a percentage of the dwelling coverage rather than a flat dollar amount. On scattered pitting worth a few hundred dollars of repair, the claim may not clear the deductible, and it is worth knowing that before a claim goes on your record.

Adjusters approve scopes, not totals. Get a written scope from the crew that names the elevations, the wall system, the square footage of rebuilt area, and whether the recommendation is spot repair, recoat, or coating, with the reason. A number without a scope gets argued. A scope gets approved or amended.

Matching is part of the scope. A spot repair on a pitted, sun-faded west elevation cannot be blended invisibly; Pueblo’s near 3,470 hours of annual sunshine make sure of that. The repair, and what it costs

Scattered pits and spalls are cut back to a clean edge, sounded outward until the wall is solid, and rebuilt in coats with the texture feathered into the surrounding wall. That prices at $8 to $15 per square foot of rebuilt area; a dozen pits might be 15 or 20 square feet once each is cut to a clean boundary, so a few hundred dollars over the $300 to $500 service minimum. A whole pitted elevation is usually better served by a recoat at $3 to $6 per square foot, or on a sound base with light pitting, an elastomeric coating at $1.50 to $3.50. One-coat walls with crushed foam get the foam replaced before the new basecoat. EIFS gets EIFS components. The pricing page has the whole table.

Why the timing matters more than the price

Hail season ends in mid-September. NWS Pueblo puts the mean first fall freeze at October 8. That is a window of a few weeks between the last storm and the first freeze, and it is the most valuable few weeks of the year for a stucco wall. Every pit is a spot where the finish is thinner and the ring around it is cracked. Water enters that ring in an October rain, freezes on one of the 165 nights at or below 32 degrees, and the pit becomes a spall. A spall exposes the brown coat, which drinks water all winter, and by spring the patch is twice the size and may reach the lath.

Sealed in September, hail damage is a few hundred dollars. Left until April, it is a patching job, and after a second summer it can be a recoat. The freeze-thaw prep checklist picks up where this post ends.
